What is Community Acupuncture, AKA Battlefield Acupuncture?

Writer: Pamela Wake, L.Ac.Pamela Wake, L.Ac.

Community Acupuncture is an ancient holistic therapy of Acupuncture which first originated in China about 8,000 years ago. It provides immediate relief for acute and chronic pain, stress and other common health complaints without any restrictions. Also known as NADA Protocol or Battlefield Acupuncture, the military have been employing this protocol for decades to assist service members with pain and receive relief without the use of opiods. This allows them to return to their work and life activities without any impairment.

BFA has a “central effect” on the nervous system and the cingulate gyrus, an area of the brain that processes pain, according to Dr. Niemtzow, who is the director of the U.S. Air Force Acupuncture and Integrative Medicine Center at the Malcolm Grow Medical Clinics and Surgery Center on Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. He started treating troops with BFA in 2001 and found it was the most effective way to provide immediate relief with no side effects, with service members experiencing up to an 80% efficacy in the first treatment.

Acupuncturists offer what is called Community Acupuncture to patients and their community to allow more people the opportunity to experience the beneficial effects of Acupuncture. The protocol treats headaches, muscle and body tension, fatigue, insomnia and a host of other common health issues. The primary function of the NADA Protocol is to take the body out of "fight or flight" by calming the parasympathetic nervous system, and was initially used in the mental health sector to aid individuals in recovery. In communities all around the country, groups of people can participate in a short session taking 30 minutes and then continue with their daily activities. Evolution Acupuncture now offers Community Acupuncture on Saturday afternoon at 1pm. To learn how you can join a session, click here.
